Installing Corrugated PVC Roof Sheets

Vistalux corrugated PVC sheets are designed for easy DIY installation and reliable long‑term performance. Correct installation is essential to ensure weather resistance, durability, and warranty compliance. This guide explains how to install corrugated PVC roofing sheets correctly for sheds, carports, pergolas, lean‑tos, and garden buildings.

Tools & Materials Required

Before installing your corrugated PVC sheets, ensure you have:

  • Vistalux corrugated PVC roof sheets (correct profile and thickness)

  • Manufacturer‑approved roofing fixings with caps and sealing washers

  • Drill and suitable drill bits

  • Fine‑toothed saw or power tool suitable for cutting PVC

  • Measuring tape, marker and spirit level

  • Butyl sealing tape (for end laps and wall flashing)

  • Safety gloves and eye protection

Step 1: Roof Pitch & Supporting Structure

  • Corrugated PVC roof sheets must be installed on a roof with a minimum pitch of 5° to ensure effective water runoff.

  • A pitch of 10° or greater is recommended where possible for improved weather resistance.

  • Sheets must be fixed to a sound, level supporting structure, such as timber battens or steel purlins.

  • Support centres must comply with manufacturer recommendations and may vary depending on sheet profile and thickness.

Step 2: Planning Sheet Layout

  • Calculate coverage using the effective cover width of the corrugated PVC sheets, not the overall width.

  • Plan sheet layout so side laps and end laps face away from the prevailing wind.

  • Allow sheets to overhang the roof edge by approximately 60 mm to ensure rainwater drains into the gutter.

Step 3: Sheet Orientation

  • Install corrugated PVC sheets with the corrugations running vertically down the roof slope.

  • Begin fixing from the lower edge of the roof and work upwards.

  • Ensure the first sheet is square, as misalignment will affect the entire roof.

Step 4: Cutting Corrugated PVC Sheets

  • Cut corrugated PVC sheets using a fine‑toothed saw or suitable power tool.

  • Fully support sheets during cutting to prevent cracking or vibration.

  • Avoid cutting sheets in very cold conditions, as PVC becomes less flexible at low temperatures.

Step 5: Drilling Fixing Holes

  • All fixing holes must be pre‑drilled before installation.

  • Holes must be drilled oversize to allow for thermal expansion and contraction of the PVC sheets.

  • Support the sheet directly beneath each drilling point to avoid damage.

  • Never force fixings through undrilled sheets.

Step 6: Allowing for Thermal Expansion

  • Corrugated PVC roof sheets expand and contract with temperature changes.

  • Do not overtighten fixings — washers should be snug but not compressed excessively.

  • Fixings must allow the sheet to move freely during expansion.

Step 7: Fixing Corrugated PVC Sheets

  • Use only manufacturer‑approved roofing fixings with sealing washers.

  • Fix sheets through the recommended point of the corrugation for the selected profile.

  • Sheets must be fixed at every recommended support position.

  • Work progressively across the roof, checking alignment regularly.

Step 8: Side & End Overlaps

  • Maintain the correct side overlap for the selected corrugated profile.

  • End laps must meet minimum requirements:

    • 150 mm end lap for roofs with a pitch of 10°

    • 300 mm end lap for roofs with a pitch of 5°

  • Use butyl sealing tape between end laps to prevent dust and water ingress.

Step 9: Flashings & Accessories

  • Install compatible wall flashings, ridge pieces, verge trims and closure fillers where required.

  • Always use profile matched accessories designed for corrugated PVC roofing sheets.

  • Seal flashings using butyl tape to achieve a watertight finish.

Step 10: Walking on Corrugated PVC Sheets

  • Avoid walking directly on corrugated PVC sheets.

Storage Before Installation

  • Store corrugated PVC roof sheets flat and fully supported.

  • Keep sheets out of direct sunlight and away from heat sources.

  • Do not store on uneven surfaces or in conditions that may cause distortion.

Cleaning & Maintenance

  • Clean corrugated PVC roofing sheets using warm water and mild detergent.

  • Avoid abrasive cleaners, solvents or harsh chemicals.

  • Inspect fixings periodically to ensure they remain secure.
